What the Tip Calculator does
This is a quick way to figure out a gratuity and divide a restaurant bill without doing mental math at the table. Punch in the bill, choose a tip percentage, and say how many people are sharing the cost. You instantly see the total to pay, the tip in dollars, and what each person owes. It is handy for dinners out, group lunches, bar tabs, taxi rides, or anywhere you split a check with friends.
How to use it
- In Bill amount, type the total on the check (it starts at 50 as an example).
- Set the Tip field to the percentage you want to leave. The default is 15%, so change it to 18, 20, or whatever you prefer.
- Use Split between to enter how many people are paying. Leave it at 1 if you are covering the whole thing.
- Read the results: Total to pay (bill plus tip), Tip amount on its own, and Per person so everyone knows their share.
- Tweak any number to compare options, for example see how the per-person amount changes between an 18% and a 20% tip.
Why use it here
It is free, there is no app to download, and you never create an account. The calculation happens right in your browser, so the figures you enter stay on your device. Results update as soon as you change a field, which is faster than tapping numbers into a phone keypad while the waiter waits.
One tip: if you want a round per-person number, nudge the tip percentage up or down by a point or two and watch the Per person line settle on an even figure. That makes it easy when everyone is paying cash. Keep in mind this is a convenience tool for everyday use, not financial advice, so double-check the receipt before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I split the tip and bill between several people?
- Type the number of diners into the "Split between" field. The calculator divides the total (bill plus tip) evenly and shows the amount each person owes under "Per person".
- What tip percentage should I enter?
- That is up to you and local custom. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is common for sit-down service. Just type your chosen number into the Tip field; it is read as a percent of the bill before tax.
- Does the tip get calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- It uses whatever you put in the "Bill amount" field. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure; if you prefer to tip on the after-tax total, enter that instead.
- Is the tip calculator free and private?
- Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the math runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
